Ekemo Studios - Alaska Sculptures Carvings "We are the largest carving shop in Alaska. 5 carvers who specialize in soapstone, alabaster, fossilised walrus bone, whalebone and wood. In twenty five years, doing carvings and sculptures, we have seen many of our pieces go into fine gallery's, museums, and private collections of very famous and extraordinary people who collect from all over the world. It is always a pleasure to hear that a piece has been purchased and it will be presented along with other unique art forms . Carving bone from the sea mammals is an ancient art in Alaska. We know from archeological finds that thousands of years ago, Alaska's aboriginal people made most of their tools and weapons from bone and ivory. Many items were made for special ceremonies, decoration and to depict the world they lived in . Today Alaskan carver's still use bone as a medium for their art forms." R. J. Ekemo Kent R. Soapstone Artists of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut  The soapstone artists of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut have been creating quality carvings for 30 years. The same techniques that we use today have been passed down from generation to generation. Find out more about our carvers and about our company.

  • "A connoisseur of Inuit art can identify an individual carvers work from across the room, although this skill takes many years of dealing with sculptures on a daily basis. Soapstone carving is valued by what the market will pay. The carvers are paid very little compared to what their piece sells for from a gallery. We are hoping to change that! We are offering the carvers, we buy from, a better price than they can get from the stores. They have to turn around and sell the carvings through their wholesale warehouses to galleries, art shops etc which in turn have to raise the prices in order to make a profit. We are selling direct to our customers whether they be from the general public or in business for themselves and can recognize good prices for quality work when they see it. Some of our carvers are world famous and have their work in several collections, museums and galleries around the world."
