George Baker -- Kinetic Sculpture - As a close friend, student, and fellow colleague of George's, I must unfortunately announce that George passed away on the 21st of July 1997. All of the innumerable students, friends and other people whose lives he touched will miss him greatly. This site will continue to be administered as a living memorial to George and his work. The faculty at Occidental College are now organizing a memorial retrospective of works from the artist's personal collection which highlight the numerous phases of his aesthetic journey. Mobiles as an art form have degenerated into abstract trifles, perhaps because nobody has figured out how to make representational mobiles, or there have been no innovations since Calder decided he wanted to sculpt space rather than form.
