Dragon's Egg - By Ben Carpenter

The grain in this piece is overwhelmingly beautiful. I was inspired by this golden burl to create a shape worthy of this wood. The base of each spike has been turned round on a lathe and then hand carved into its curved shape. The spike was then inserted into a matching hole drilled into the body. This joint is flawlessly tight giving the appearance that Dragon's Egg was carved from one solid piece of wood. Determining the layout for the spikes involved simple mathematical functions. The smoothly morphing repetition of the spikes symbolizes many subtle patterns in the animal kingdom. Its silky skin surrounds a dense core of hard maple. It is sensuous to the touch.
