Edit User Permissions

Overview

This function allows you to set individual user permissions. Setting user permissions allows you to control the type of access a user has to files and directories on your site.

FrontPage users should be careful when setting permissions on directories. If you set permissions on the admin directory or any FrontPage directory, you may cause FrontPage to function incorrectly. We recommend you set permissions only on user created directories that are not sub-webs.

Fields
 User Name (Not Required)
This field is for identifying the user for which you wish to set permissions. The default is the anonymous web browser account, browser.
 Directory (Not Required)
This field is for identifying the directory for which you wish to set permissions. The default is the root directory.
 Permissions (Required)
This field is for selecting the level of access you wish to grant the user.
 Sub Directories (Not Required)
This field allows you to select whether or not you want the permissions to filter to all directories beneath the directory in the directory field.
 Reset Permissions (Alternate)
This button allows you to reset the permissions for your site back to the default settings when the site was first setup. This should only be used if you're experiencing uncontrollable permission difficulties.

Notes

If you would like to reset your permissions to the default server settings, which will remove any permissions you've set, click HERE. This will give you a clean set of permissions.

You may set the permissions on user's you've defined through create user.

You may type directories and/or file names in the directory box.

Leave the directory field blank to set permissions on the root directory.

List permission allows a user access to the directory, but they have no rights to the files within the directory.

All users must have at least list access to the root directory in order to log in through FTP.

Two user names, browser and ftp_user, are created by the system to handle anonymous web browser and FTP access.

If you create a directory off the root with the same name as a user's name, when the user logs in through an FTP client they will automatically be placed in that directory.

Samples
Shutting off web access to a directory:
User name : Directory : friendsonly Permissions : No Access Subdirectories : Checked

Now when someone tries to go to a web page within the friendsonly directory, they will be prompted for a user name and password.

Creating a user that will only be able to access his/her directory:
1) Create the user. For example rsmith.
2) Using FTP, create a directory off root called rsmith.
3) Set the root directory permissions for rsmith to list.

         User name : rsmith
         Directory :
       Permissions : List
    Subdirectories : Checked
4) Give rsmith full access to his home directory.
         User name : rsmith
         Directory : rsmith
       Permissions : Read/Write/Execute/Delete
    Subdirectories : Checked
Now whenever rsmith logs in with an FTP program, he will be placed into his home directory. If bubba should go into the root directory, he will only be able to list the files, but will not be able to download, execute, modify, or even view the files.
