Welkom bij Hortus Haren, Rijk van Ming Ice carving, or bingdiao, is an art which is practised during the winter months in the far north of China. Ice lanterns is how the local inhabitants refer to the resulting works of art. Because long, long ago the fishermen began to use hollowed out blocks of ice as lampshades to shield their candles from the wind, to prevent the flames from being blown out. These are the primitive precursors of today's art form. Ice festivals The inhabitants of Harbin, the capital of the most northerly province Heilongjiang, organised the first modern Ice Lantern show in 1963. With the aid of moulds, they made all kinds of models and illuminated them with candles. It proved a great success and a tradition was born. Since then, there has been an Ice Festival every year, lasting from Chinese New Year right up to the end of the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival (mid February). 14th Annual Plymouth International Ice Sculpture Spectacular January 13-18, 1999 Plymouth, Michigan USA In Japan ice sculpturing is a full time profession, the sculptors carve wood in the summer and ice in the winter. In America ice sculpturing is a relatively young art form helping to revive the dying craft as part of the culinary profession. In the last 15 years the Plymouth International Ice Sculpture Spectacular has been the reason for this art form being rediscovered in Michigan. Carvers from all over the world come to sculpt in one of the largest and best ice carving events in the country. Feb 2000: Cripple Creek Ice Fest 2000 Eleven talented sculptors from Fairbanks, Alaska and Ice Alaska will be arriving in town on February 11 to create an ice extravaganza throughout Cripple Creek. Sculptures will range in size from a 3 foot block of ice to 10-15 tall creations. Everything from an ice donkey to Bob Womack panning for gold, from probably the world’s largest ice sculptured rose to dance hall girls will be visible on Bennett Avenue during the festival. The sculptures will be created right before your eyes February 11-21 as the carvers fire up their chainsaws and tools and bring the blocks of ice to life. Evenings will provide an entirely different view of things as local casinos and businesses light the ice sculptures. By strategically placing as many sculptures as possible in shaded, north-side locations the sculptures should last for weeks beyond the festival dates, for those of you unable to make it to town during that time frame. | ||
